On Parliament Hill stand all the buildings of the government of Canada. Most of theses buildings were built in the 18th century in a neo-gothic style, which gives the hill its special atmosphere. Unfortunately, in 1916, a fire completely destroyed the centre block where the government sits, as well as the clock tower. Its reconstruction lasted 10 years, and soon after, the clock tower became the Peace Tower, in honour of the soldiers who fought during the First World War.
The only building that was left almost untouched was the Library. It was restored, but kept its original aspect. On all the buildings of the Parliament Hill, you will have the chance to see carvings of stones and gargoyles that decorate them. Take the time to go on a guided visit of the buildings, but mainly the centre block, in which guides will explain you the functioning of the government and during which you can visit the Peace Tower.
