This municipality received its name from the manor that Louis-Joseph Papineau had built in 1855 and that can be visited today. With its location along the Outaouais River, this town proposes a large range of activities, including golfing, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, hunting and fishing. Accessible by the tourist information office, the Papineau Memorial Chapel houses the remains of Louis-Joseph Papineau and his family, and also shows objects and furniture that were used for the religious ceremonies.
One of the major attractions you don’t want to miss in the region is the Fairmont Le Château Montebello, the largest log building in the world. Bearing a star-like shape, this architectural treasure was built in 1930 and is now worldly renowned.
You like animals? Then visit the Parc Oméga where you can tour the site in your car and discover numerous wild animal species living in liberty in their natural habitats. In this park, you will find buffaloes, elk, black bears, bucks, Virginia deer, moose, ibex, wild boars, wolves and indigenous small animals. You can even go out of your vehicle and walk along the forest interpretation and the moose observation trails, which are protected areas where no dangerous animal lives. You can also have a nice meal at the panoramic restaurant or have a picnic while admiring the birds’ lake.
For people who arrive in the region, the Montebello train station is an essential stop. In fact, it houses the tourism information office as well as a gift shop and is also the place where you can get tickets for the Manoir-Papineau National Historical Site of Canada as well as for the trails leading to the Fairmont Le Château Montebello.
